Now that the month of August has ended, I’d like to take a little time to reflect upon some of the great music this past month brought us. I probably found myself listening to more new releases than I did during any other month this year so I feel this is a conversation worthy of having. Looking forward, there’s so much more good stuff on the way as well. Through the rest of the year, we’ll see some of the top bands out there coming out with follow up efforts to their previous ones, and just about every single genre will experience a few highlights worthy of waiting for.

How about Wilco coming out with yet another album, despite the fact that it seems like their last one just dropped? They must be approaching 10 releases by now. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah also just came up with something new.

The Calypso music competition is a major draw during the Crop Over festival every year. Calypso music is a syncopated style music that draws on current events and local politics for lyrical inspiration. Throughout the event Calypso tents are occupied by artists who deliver rousing performances and deliver social commentary and other comments about political happenings.

The ultimate prize for the calypso artists is the Calypso Monarch Award. Outside the main competition are two other popular battles including the Party Monarch and People’s Monarch awards. The Party Monarch competition is decided by a group of judges who are evaluating a group’s stage presence and live presentation. A group who best utilizes props and engages the crowd is crowned the winner. For the People’s Monarch award, a song battle is created. The audience votes and groups are eliminated until a winner is chosen. If you are planning to visit the island during the Calypso competition you will want to stay on the East Coast of the island. The competition happens along the Ermy Bourne Highway.

Another featured event during the Crop Over festival that draws spectators is the Cohobblopot celebration. The home of this event that combines drama, dance and music takes place at the Bridgetown Market Street Fair. During this event the queen and king of the costume band competition are crowned and people who attend enjoy Barbados cultural events and the smells and flavors of local cuisine.

Nearly every day during the two month festival, visitors and locals will find special food, parties, craft fairs, and cavalcades all across the island. Tim’s, located along the main Highway is the center of the event and they host events every day during the celebration. In the beginning of the movie, the three main characters, John, Julian, and Paul start off on a three week survival adventure in the Kaibab National Forest in Arizona. The survival of each individual will solely be determined by their ability to live off of the land and their environment, their strength, their instincts, and their wits.

John is the only one who can keep the two of them apart and keep everyone from losing focus.

Paul has only agreed to risk his life on a three week survival hike in the desert for one reason. That reason is a small cactus plant called peyote. When ingested, the effects of the plant resemble psychedelic drug. It also makes a person thirsty. Because they only have three bottles of water, Julian and John urge Paul to wait to take the drug until they can find a better water source. Paul does not heed his friends’ advice.

As with any good horror movie, the situation becomes disastrous. The boys actually ingest the peyote, setting of a sequence of rather cryptic and crazy events. It is here where the movie actually begins to move at a much faster and more intense pace. The characters become more developed and begin to really captivate the audience. Viewers will be anxious to see who the ultimate survivor is going to be, if there is one at all.

Deadfall Trail is a pretty good movie. It may never me the criteria to be considered one of Hollywood’s great horror movie classics. However, it is a well written and intriguing film. The acting is up to par and the characters are well developed. It is a movie that teenage boys and young adult males will definitely enjoy. It is entertaining and perfect for movie night.
