If you’ve been around DSLR photography for any time period you’ll have heard that the glass (lenses) in front of the camera is as vital, if not more important, than the camera itself. It’s surely true.
After agonizing over the choice about which digital camera you will choose, the choice of a lens or camera lenses for that camera is just as crucial. And that’s not an easy choice, either. Every new photographer comes to the realization that selecting a lens is a time for self control and patience. There is no place for impulsive behavior here. You have to match up your needs with what is available, and, if you have the cash on hand, you make the purchase.
Selecting The Right Lenses There’s some good news in terms of making a camera lens purchase. Several lenses might suit your requirements for more than one sort of photography. Your first lens purchase might be among those lenses which satisfies several kind of photography. Generally, people get a multi-focal length, or zoom, lens as their very first lens. That one lens, if well-planned, can be a general, all-purpose lens for daily photos, but it can also be a fantastic portrait lens, a medium telephoto lens for taking pictures from a distance, and a normal lens.
A lens such as a zoom lens of 18-105mm (or somewhere in that range) is just the type of lens which can fill numerous photography needs. Take your time selecting that first digital slr lens because it is an important one. As your photography experiences develop, you probably be determining how you want to go as a major focus in the special type of photography you want to focus on. This decision will affect the lenses you’ll need to add to your kit.
For instance, if you wish to specialize in “people photography,” you may narrow down your lens choices to include a medium telephoto lens, and that choice will differ greatly from that of somebody else who wants to focus on landscape photography, as their choice would probably be a wide-angle lens that would be good for their particular type of pictures.
Specialty Camera Lenses A macro lens, while suitable for close-up photography, is among those lenses that can be used for more than one type of photography. Many folks don’t realize that macro lenses are excellent portrait lenses and medium telephoto lenses. One great macro lens can do the job of numerous lenses, and do it well. You may even need to add a “normal lens” to your photography kit.
While 50mm is not technically “normal” for every camera, it’s a great choice for nearly all photographer since there are numerous things you can do with that focal length and aperture. The wide aperture of nearly all 50mm lenses is fairly wide, therefore it will give you the advantage of being able to shoot in low light that many of the zoom lenses (specially the less costly ones) do not have. Furthermore, 50mm lenses are ideal for portraits and street photography and also doing a pretty good job with all but the most demanding of close-up pictures.
Finding camera lenses should not be an impulsive decision. Each lens must be selected with much thought and consideration as to the effect it’ll have on your goal as a photographer.
