Superman is one of the absolute most readily identified icons on the planet. His likeness has been replicated staggering numbers of times and tales of his exploits translated into a vast array of media including comic books, board games, theatrical productions, television shows, several movies, audio books and more. If you look hard enough, you may be able to locate a seemingly infinite level of products bearing his name, even Superman underwear.
In terms of internationally recognized icons, superman has got to be ranked upon the top echelon of any list. The famous and thoroughly iconic ‘S’ symbol on his chest can be readily identified by people of a great many nationalities and varying walks of life all over the world. Posters, billboards, an entire movie franchise, and staggering numbers of products, all bear his image and likeness and are sold in millions of stores in hundreds of locations.
Strictly speaking, identifying a kind of media that has not been utilized in reproducing something regarding his story in some form or another would be incredibly difficult. Alongside the use of his actual image, associations and references to the character or attributes of the ‘Man of Steel’ are almost as routine in popular culture as employing a picture of him.
Though many fans routinely speculate and argue over the hundreds of possible reasons behind this pop icons’ enduring popularity, perhaps one of those most commonly put forward is that of his unchanging goodness – his unquestioning, implacable will to be a representative of justice.
It was seventy three years ago that the #1 issue of action comics came out and allowed the Man Of Steel to make his first appearance; two artists, Joe Schuster and Jerry Seigel created the character in 1938. And, though a great many things have changed since that time, it would seem self-evident that the archetype of the ‘superhero’ has retained its’ claim on the imagination of the populace. For a comic strip character to stay at the forefront of popular culture for so long, speaks volumes of the eagerness of people to hold on to hopes and dreams and heroes.
Some might speculate that we can’t help but see versions of ourselves in these characters; that they represent the fundamental ways we would aspire to be, but find exceedingly difficult in our day to day. In our reality, many things are constantly muddled into shades of gray; the superhero worlds where right and wrong are never in dispute, can seem infinitely simpler.
Perhaps if one were to look closely, one might surmise that a real reason for the continued popularity of the super hero even unto modern times, is the fact that they alone have the ability to forcefully and profoundly influence events in their worlds, whereas we as everyday people sometimes feel we do not. That a someone could exist with the power to ‘rescue us’ becomes a tantalizing idea indeed.
Whether you’re a grownup with wistful memories of your first time encountering the Man of Steel in a comic or on television, or a full fledged fanatic with a wall full of posters, a room full of paraphernalia, a set of Superman underwear and matching sheets, you can take solace in the fact that there are some embodied ideals that refuse to die, or fade away.
