Dexter clearly feels some level of guilt at what has happened, knowing that it is his fault for not killing Arthur sooner. However it does not present in the normal way that grief would in most people, leaving him rather adrift. Even the visions of his adopted father and mentor Harry, which normally serve as the closest thing he has to a conscience, seem to have abandoned him. Flashbacks to Dexter’s very first date with Rita also show the depth of Dexter’s guilt as he remembers the lies he told her right from the very beginning.

When Rita’s children, Astor and Cody, return from Disneyland with their grandparents Dexter is forced to break the news to them. Meanwhile Debra goes to Dexter’s house to clean up the crime scene, and Quinn comes along to help. Following the clean up Debra breaks down and quickly finds herself in the arms of Quinn and things get very physical very fast from there.

Debra seems to immediately regret it, and practically flees the house. This gives Quinn an excuse to talk to the neighbor who had been crying at the sight of Rita being carried out dead on a stretcher. The neighbor confides in Quinn about the kiss and also says that Dexter punched him over it. Quinn tries to relay this to Laguerta, who responds only with anger, not wanting to deal with this case at all.

Finally Dexter packs his boat with only the essentials, burns his storage container that had served as his killing office, and heads out. In doing so he misses his “interview” with the FBI and friends and family are left standing at Rita’s funeral wondering if he will show up. When Dexter stops to fuel up his boat he encounters an aggressive and rather heartless man at the seemingly abandoned fueling station. Dexter follows him into the bathroom and in a fit of rage beats him to death with an anchor. Harry appears to Dexter once again saying that this was “the most human thing” that Dexter has done since Rita dies.

If you are reading into this article, than you are likely looking to learn a little more about one of the greatest films to be released in the year 2000, “Memento”. This film has several different reasons for being as good as it was, and many of these will be discussed within this article, along with a detailed plot synopsis.

There are several things to understand and learn when it comes to fully appreciating a film like this. The best way that anyone can really learn about almost any film is through reading a brief plot synopsis to give them the most important parts of the plot. The trouble with this movie and that plan is, this movie does not follow a normal chronological order.

To salvage the description of the film itself through the plot synopsis, some of this information might seem as though it is following a pattern, but it likely will not be a pattern that you would see within the movie. Rather, this is simply to just make it easier on you to follow along, rather than following the film scene by scene.

The reason, is that the main character of the piece, Leonard Shelby, suffers from anterograde amnesia. This is a condition that allows you to keep all the memories that you have up until the time you get it, but you cannot create new memories from then after. He got the condition from receiving a blow to the head when he attempted to stop two men from raping and killing his wife. He managed to kill one of the two, while the other clubbed him in the head. This blow caused the amnesia.

He is rather taken advantage of in his condition, as several people have allowed him to do their dirty work, giving him ammunition in saying that they had something to do with the killing of his wife. Important information that he collects that is relative to the case is tattooed onto his body, so that he does not forget them.

A man claiming to be an officer of the law, who prefers to go by Teddy, offers to take him to a fellow named Jimmy who he says was the other killer there the night of his wife’s death. The truth is, Jimmy is just a low life drug dealer who had nothing to do with Leonard’s wife. But Lenny doesn’t know this, and he kills Jimmy and is fed a load of lies from Teddy about who Jimmy was.

You meet a number of different folks throughout the story, and you aren’t certain at first how they would play into the story if they even do at all. You do presumably learn (along with Leonard) who the second killer and rapist of his wife is. You get a front row seat to how he handles that situation. But this film might not have been so great, if it weren’t for impressive performances by Guy Pearce (Lenny) and Joe Pantaliano (Teddy).

“Memento” can be hard to follow if you aren’t paying very close attention to it. The film was likely as successful as it was given the nature of the title character’s condition and how the events of the film played into the chaos that living without being able to make new memories would inspire.
